Portsmouth's Cultural Consortium - shaping culture's future

Cuts proposed to Aspex Gallery grant

What the cuts mean for the Aspex Gallery

The proposed cuts to the Arts see Aspex's grant reduced by £4,600, this will mean they will have been cut by 18% in just two years as they suffered a cut last year of £3,500, a regular grant for their education work. They have worked hard to replace this income lost last year from other funders and their education activities have not been unduly affected. However, this year's proposed cut is from their core funding.

This much needed support from the Council helps cover their staffing and premises costs, aspects of the gallery operation which are not possible to cover from project funds from most trusts or foundations.

For this reason the loss of this funding will have a detrimental impact on the artistic and educational activities they are able to deliver in the coming year.

For every £1 Portsmouth City Council invested in aspex in 2009/10 the gallery has brought in £11.82 of economic investment from outside of the city. We cannot underestimate how important this grant is in levering this additional funding - money which in the last year has provided over 25,000 people with access to contemporary visual art and craft exhibitions, and has enabled them to work with 27 schools and community groups, involving almost 4000 local people in workshops and projects.
