London 2012 Open Weekend - YOUR CHANCE TO BECOME INVOLVED
The London 2012 Open Weekend, which is taking place 23-25 July 2010, marks the two year countdown to the start of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2009 over 90% of organisations surveyed stated that their event attracted new audiences (source: London 2012). The Open Weekend is a great opportunity to showcase what Portsmouth has to offer as a city, reach new audiences, and to be part of the part of the London 2012 Games.
London 2012 are inviting local authorities, sporting and cultural organisations, venues and community groups across the UK to take part in the countdown celebrations by setting a challenge that will open up opportunities for the public to try something new or take an existing interest to the next level.
If you would like to organise an event then here are some ideas to get you thinking:
* Get members of the public to fill in a question sheet/trail whilst visiting your attraction /or at the end to see how much they have learnt during their visit
* Challenge public to climb all the steps in the Spinnaker Tower - maybe in teams competing against each other to see who does it the quickest
* Create a volleyball competition - so teams play against each other
* How many different types of reptiles can they spot
* Challenge people to take part in a new sport/activity
* Get people to create a piece of art based on their hopes and dreams for the coming 2 years
* Teach public a new skill that they can take away and develop
* Challenge public to find out more about their city/family tree/learn more about a topic - eg Dickens, Mary Rose, history of Portsmouth
* Put selection of artefacts out for the public to try and guess what the object was used for
* Challenge people to create a piece of music, dance within a set timeframe - that could then be performed/showcased during the weekend
