Portsmouth's Cultural Consortium - shaping culture's future

Committee History

The Cultural Consortium (CC) was successfully launched on the 31 March 2004. 71 people, now consortium members, elected the first Executive Committee.

The work of CCIG (Cultural Consortium Initiation Group) is now complete and has now disbanded. The turn out for the launch was particularly impressive, especially so as invitations went out so near the event date. Some 900 invitations were sent out. We are convinced that more people would have attended if we had been able to give earlier notice of the launch, and if we had access to more extensive databases. However, on limited resources of time and money, the consortium has got off to a very good start.

The first Executive Committee will aim to meet soon after Easter. One of the key issues it will need to consider is how it will stay both close and responsive to its members. A key aim of the Cultural Consortium is to extend its membership to individuals and groups that have an interest in the cultural vitality of the city - that’s everything from skateboarding to flower arranging, running through music, dance, theatre and much else.

The more signed up members the more the Cultural Consortium will:

  • be able to demonstrate widespread support for culture in Portsmouth
  • be able to act as a powerful voice for culture when working with the local authority and others
  • be responsive to the range of interests captured by the term ‘culture’.
